The consumption of agricultural and natural areas in the Ile-de-France region : Several approaches to obtain precise monitoring

Greater Paris is spreading out over surrounding agricultural and natural areas, thus making them increasingly precious for the well-being of the population and for the harmonious development of the Ile-de-France region. In order to preserve these areas, the urban development plan of 1994 restricted their use and created a programme (named OCEAN) to observe the consumption of agricultural and natural spaces. It is thus essential to measure how rapidly urban development is consuming these areas. The annual survey on land use (Teruti) and other statistical sources serve this purpose.
For the last twenty years, around 2,000 hectares, with variations according to the general economic situation, have been consumed each year. In order to improve the accuracy of survey results and their analysis, a comparative study of the main tools for land use monitoring has been made, concerning the Seine-et-Marne département, by the regional agricultural statistics bureau and the Institut d’aménagement et d’urbanisme of the Ile-de-France region (a development and urbanisation institute).
