French salmoniculture over the last few years has had to adapt to a difficult context : stronger environmental constraints, improvements imposed to respect regulatory standards, competition from Norwegian and Scottish products, an insufficiently strong image for quality.
French salmoniculture over the last few years has had to adapt to a difficult context : stronger environmental constraints, improvements imposed to respect regulatory standards, competition from Norwegian and Scottish products, an insufficiently strong image for quality. Farming practices have evolved : in every domain technical mastery becomes a determining factor. Water resources are used carefully : farms adapt their water sources to the various productions, monitor waste in order to preserve water quality downstream, modernise oxygenation techniques, sometimes equiping themselves with closed-circuit installations. There are changes in aquaculture tanks and processing equipment, rationalising the work. In order to make better use of animal feed, fish stock management is becoming automated. The appearance of extruded granules has permitted a decrease in consumption, while improving respect for the environment. Recommendations concerning animal welfare are better taken into account, and health care for the farms is being organised.
