Agreste cahiers n° 36 - décembre 1998
Since 1995, 55 000 farms have disappeared.
Since 1995, 55 000 farms have disappeared. The number of field cropping holdings has held steadiest, but that of part time holdings, which resisted best until recently, is now decreasing faster than the others. Half the remaining farms have increased their economic size between 1995 and 1997, and the lands made available by activity cessation have allowed one-third of current farms to extend their acreage. The land concentration movement into units of great dimension is ongoing : farms over 200 hectares now account for 13 % of the national utilized agricultural area.
