Fewer than 8,000 farmers under 40 have settled each year in 1996 and 1997.
Fewer than 8,000 farmers under 40 have settled each year in 1996 and 1997. One out of four has joined a joint holding, as the EARL (exploitation agricole à responsabilité limitée : limited responsibility farm) meets growing success. Son always follows father. He takes over a farm of good dimensions, especially if he already worked in agriculture before settling. Newly settled persons are better trained than their elder, and one out of four extends the farm he takes over. The units of mixed orientation are transformed to increase specialisation.
