Agreste cahiers n° 3 - septembre 2000
More than 126,000 farms, or one-fifth of all the farms in France, are classed in mountain zones in 1997.
More than 126,000 farms, or one-fifth of all the farms in France, are classed in mountain zones in 1997. Excluding the piedmont, the mountain zone and the high-mountain zone account for one out of seven. In Europe, nearly half of the countries in the Union have no mountain farms at all, whereas Austria and Portugal do count half of their farms in such zones.
French mountain farms are mostly oriented towards raising herbivores. They are of small economic size, but they require a large amount of labour, furnished by the holder and family members.
