Around 1970, agricultural land in France underwent a redistribution that was boosted by the setting up of the common agricultural policy (CAP). One household in three engages in more than one professional activity ; half work exclusively in farming. Whereas the behaviour of farmers varies only a little over time, that of their spouses has changed significantly. Today, 60 % of the wives of young farmers work independently, outside of agriculture. The development of farms under the form of farming civil companies accelerated this trend even more.
The largest farms are those where the farmer works exclusively as a farmer and where the spouse works at a non-agricultural job.
