CAP direct aid : amounts remain closely linked to farm size
Agreste cahiers n° 3 - septembre 2000
Since the 1992 reform of the Common Agricultural Policy, direct European subsidies account for more than 25 % of farm revenue.
Since the 1992 reform of the Common Agricultural Policy, direct European subsidies account for more than 25 % of farm revenue. This aid was introduced to compensate for reduced price supports for agricultural products under a common market organisation, and amounts are in general very closely linked to the economic size of farms.
Although one out of four French farms receives no subsidies at all, those that do benefit collect an average of 84,000 Francs ; nevertheless wide variations can be noted. 62 % of aid goes to the largest 20 % of farms. Most of these farms will be concerned by the measure designed to modulate subsidies that will be applied starting in 2000.
