Breeding in Cantal seen through its rights to subsidies or rights to produce (or how to use administrative sources for statistical purposes)
Agreste cahiers n° 40 - juin 1999
In Cantal, a breeding area, cattle ensures the quasi-total production of agricultural holdings.
In Cantal, a breeding area, cattle ensures the quasi-total production of agricultural holdings. Four farms out of ten have both milk cows and cattle for slaughtering, generally grass-fed lean animals. So Cantal is the French department where the mixed bovine system has become most prevalent, thanks to the ability of the Salers breed.
In such a context, the study of the various subsidy rights and rights to produce which a farm has seems essential to know the breeding. At local initiative, the Cantal DDAF (Departmental Direction of Agriculture and Forestry) set about to mobilize the administrative files which are used to manage the direct aids and rights to produce, in order to make up a data base on holdings, which integrates all the rights from which they benefit (suckler cow premiums, milk quotas, ewes premiums, less favoured area premiums). This base opens new possibilities for study.
