The agricultural family population numbered 2 198 600 people in 1997, that is 4 % of the whole French population.
The agricultural family population numbered 2 198 600 people in 1997, that is 4 % of the whole French population. Women are in the minority, especially among young people, hence the increase of single males. Elderly people are still numerous, in spite of the departure of farmers who have reached the age of retirement : almost one out of three is over 55.
