In 1997, a little more than one-third of individual farmers aged at least 50 consider that they know their successors, a slightly higher proportion than in 1990. The successor is in general a member of the family, already a real farmer rather than simply a family helper. The probability of this person taking over the farm is all the greater in the case of large and specialised farms. The absence of a successor for a given farm has no effect on what will happen to the land, which will no doubt serve to expand neighbouring farms. But in general farmers without a known successor do not know who will take over their land.
