2005 farm structure survey - Work intensifies on ever-larger professional farms
Agreste cahiers Spécial Structure n° 4 - décembre 2006
There were 347,000 professional farms in 2005, 45,000 fewer than in 2000.
There were 347,000 professional farms in 2005, 45,000 fewer than in 2000. Around half of these farms expanded during the period. One-fourth of the largest farms now concentrate more than half of the economic potential. The number of corporate farms is growing, while individual farms regress. The activity of these increasingly specialised corporate farms is equivalent to the work of 751,000 people employed full time for a year, or an average of 2.2 full-time workers per farm. More than one-third of these farms increased the work done by at least 10%. This work is accomplished by the farmers and by non-family employees. The contribution of these employees now reaches 29% of the total hours worked.
